Communication Challenges: Strategies for Positive Interactions on Nagish

Not all people were born the same. Some are impatient or may not understand that they are speaking with someone who is deaf or hard of hearing.

Here are some tips for dealing with hangups:

  1. Enable caller ID so people know who is calling them.

  2. Ask people to be patient as soon as the call connects. Explain that you are using assistive technology.

  3. Use Nagish’s Quick Responses feature and set up auto-responses to ask people to be more patient.

  4. Keep your messages short: When you’re over the phone, 30 seconds can feel like a lifetime. That’s why when you’re talking to another person, they may expect you to reply fast. Keeping your responses short is the best way to ensure an effective call flow.

  5. Reach out to our support! We maintain a list of inpatient service providers and are always happy to call them on your behalf and educate them about Nagish. We will also ask them to return your calls and be more patient next time.
